History of the Crown
What was once built in 1700 as a farmhouse, with its own barn, byres and piggeries, became an inn by the owner in 1838. Farmer William Lawson, saw a chance to sell beer to the gangs of navvies building the viaduct across the River Eden and successfully applied for a licence to make & sell ale. The Crown Inn established itself over the years that followed as ‘the beer house’ and by 1871 it was called a hotel. In 1894, its owner could boast ‘first class accommodation for families and gentlemen. Special terms made, picnics provided & fishing is easily obtainable. There are good drives & lovely scenery. An excellent residence for visitors requiring rest & a change of air. Wine & spirits of the finest quality, wedding breakfasts, dinners & balls catered for’. They even had their own horses and carriages, of every description, with stables on site.
In 1916, the Crown came under the State Management Scheme & in 1932, they underwent development where the Crown was raised by adding another storey. Mrs Margaret Beavan, who was the manageress at this time, used to serve strawberry teas on the lawn, and fashionable ladies would gather wearing large hats and suitable summer attire. The hotel was sold by the State Management Scheme to Colonel Woods who in turn, sold it to Shire Inns Limited. This saw the addition of the Garden Suite & ground floor meeting rooms, leisure facilities & another wing of bedrooms. Shire Inn’s sold the hotel in 2000 to a local businessman. In 2017, the hotel was purchased by a South African Hospitality Management Company.
Today, the Crown Hotel stands proudly within the picturesque fishing village of Wetheral, on the outskirts of Carlisle. The original cobbles in front of the hotel still remain today. The present owners, have invested £1.6 million, In 2018, refurbishing many of the ground floor areas. In December 2019, the Leisure Centre was refurbished & 10 new bedrooms added, totalling 61 bedrooms in total. The hotel still hosts many fishermen visiting the close by River Eden, with lots of walks & things to do around the local area. Ask our team for more information on things to do!
UNESCO World Heritage Site that is Hadrian’s Wall, was built to guard the wild north-west frontier of the Roman Empire.
